So let's say there is a business run by someone for the past 3+ years selling few products primarily targeted for teens. Business has been consistently growing and the team is also expanding. So the CEO hires you (a data analyst) with the hope that you can provide valuable analysis which will help her figure out how to increase sales. 

People who possess Data Analysis skills have a massive edge on everyone else, because they understand what to do with all the humongous data, a business has. They know how to translate raw numbers into intelligence that drives real-world action. They know how to break down and structure complex problems to get right to the heart of the problems in their business.

So you have been sent existing Sales data which has been captured regularly. A good Data Analyst will always want to see the data because Data Analysis is all about careful thinking about evidence to derive intelligent analysis.

Knowing the problem is the very first step (i.e. define your problem). In this case it is "Increasing Sales for the Business". 

Second step is breaking the problems and data into smaller pieces (Disassemble). 

Third step is about evaluating and drawing conclusions about what you have learnt from the first 2 steps.

Final step is putting it all together and recommending a decision.

Basically all the Data Analysis is designed to lead to better business decisions.
